SAOU Death Benefit - Continuum

Being a SAOU member provides you with a death benefit, Continuum, which is a cash benefit of R20,000 provided by the SAOU to the member's named beneficiary or, in the absence of such designation, the member's estate.  


Hereby, we hope to build on the legacy you will leave behind one day.


All SAOU members automatically qualify for this benefit provided they:

  • Are younger than 65 years.
  • Are not in arrears with payment of their SAOU membership fees at the date of death.
  • New members are entitled to this benefit 90 days from the date on which their first membership fee is received by the SAOU.
  • Is no longer a student educator.

*No medical examinations are required.

Claims process

The claim form and supporting documentation must be submitted to the SAOU within six months of the member's death.


These documents include:

  • A signed claim form
  • Police report in the case of unnatural death
  • A certified copy of the claimant’s ID document not older than 3 months
  • A certified copy of the deceased’s ID document
  • A certified copy of the deceased’s death certificate
  • A certified copy and / or the original of the Executor’s appointment letter
  • Certified proof of bank details into which the benefit is to be paid;
  • 3 most recent salary slips of the deceased member
  • Written nomination of beneficiary by the deceased member (if any)

All documents must be certified copies certified as true copies by a Commissioner of Oaths.

FAQ's


  • Can my beneficiary be under 18 years old?

    No, beneficiaries must be 18 years or older.

  • Can more than one beneficiary be nominated?

    No, only one beneficiary may be nominated.

  • What happens if I haven't nominated a beneficiary?

    A claim can be submitted by the executor and the money will then be paid out to the estate.

  • Can the money still be claimed after 6 months of death

    Money can only be claimed within six months of death. After that, the benefit lapses and money is no longer payable.

  • What happens if I forget to update my beneficiary form?

    It is your responsibility as a member to ensure that your beneficiary nomination form is correct and up to date. Money will only be paid to the nominated beneficiary.
