The National Congress
Three Decades with One Vision
Die SAOU het pas sy Nasionale Kongres afgehandel, ’n belangrike geleentheid wat die rigting en visie van ons unie vir die komende driejaartermyn bepaal.
Die Nasionale Kongres dien as die SAOU se hoogste gesag. Een van die mandate van die kongres is om die strategiese fokus en prioriteite te bepaal wat die unie gedurende die volgende drie jaar moet rig.
KONGRESMOSIES
Vier-en-twintig (24) mosies is aan die kongres voorgehou. Die mosies is onder die volgende hoofonderwerpe ingedeel:
- Sake van nasionale belang: Die mosies handel oor die organisering van vakbonde met klem op lede se welstand en veiligheid, diensvoorwaardes en die beskerming van die professie.
- Statutêre verpligtinge: Die mosies handel oor uitstaande aspekte van die Suid-Afrikaanse Skolewet, Wet no. 84 van 1996, soos gewysig, deelname aan die herskryf van die postevoorsieningsmodel en die herposisionering van inklusiewe onderwys.
- Finansies: Die mosies handel oor die impak van finansiële tekorte op die grondwetlike reg op kwaliteit basiese onderwys vir leerders en optimale werksomstandighede vir onderwysers.
- Kurrikulum: Kurrikulummosies handel oor die onvoltooide en onbefondsde kurrikulum-aangeleenthede van die Departement van Basiese Onderwys.
- SAOU: Die SAOU-mosies handel oor die strategiese rigting binne die SAOU en dienslewering aan SAOU-lede.
- Ander mosies: Hierdie mosies handel oor die verbetering van dienslewering in die openbare sektor, die versterking van die onderwysstelsel en die onwettige klassifikasie van skole.
Aanvaarde mosies word na die onderskeie afdelings en/of provinsies verwys vir hantering. ‘n Verslag ten opsigte van die vordering van die mosies sal deurlopend aan die Nasionale Dagbestuur en Nasionale Uitvoerende Raad voorgehou word.
Van strategie tot grondvlak: Wat beteken dit vir jou?
Die goedgekeurde mosies en besluite wat tydens die kongres geneem is, vorm die fondament van ons organisatoriese benadering en het 'n regstreekse uitwerking op:
- Lid-ondersteuning: Die versterking van regsbystand, professionele ontwikkeling en diensvoorwaardes.
- Beleid-invloed: Kragtige en feitelik-gegronde verteenwoordiging by onderwysowerhede en nasionale forums.
- Grondvlak-impak: Praktiese oplossings, leiding en ondersteuning op skoolvlak om die daaglikse werklikheid van opvoeders te vergemaklik.
GRONDWETWYSIGINGS
Die kongres het ook verskeie grondwetwysigings goedgekeur. Die hooffokus vir die wysigings was:
- Uitgediende prosesse aan te pas by moderne tegnologie;
- Die grondwet te omskryf in meer verstaanbare taal; en
- Enkele aspekte ondubbelsinnig te stel vir maklike verwysing.
Die aangepaste grondwet dien tans by die Registrateur vir goedkeuring.
VIERING VAN UITNEMENDHEID
Laastens was die kongres ook 'n viering van uitnemendheid en die bevestiging van ons unie se identiteit en lojaliteit:
- Erkenning vir getroue diens en jarelange lidmaatskap: Ons het hulde gebring aan SAOU-personeel en SAOU-lede wat met jare se onbaatsugtige diens gehelp het om die SAOU te bou tot die betroubare organisasie wat dit vandag is.
- Onderwystoekenings: Gedurende die kongres het ons ook die geleentheid gehad om uitsonderlike opvoeders tydens ons driejaarlikse Onderwystoekennings te vereer. Klik hier om meer van hierdie wenners te lees.
- Bekendstelling van die SAOU-Lied: In samewerking met die Noordwes-Universiteit (NWU) is 'n amptelike SAOU-lied bekend gestel wat voortaan as ‘n simbool van eenheid en trots tydens vlagskipgeleenthede sal dien.
Die SAOU bly onwrikbaar daartoe verbind om met deursigtigheid, integriteit en daadkrag die belange van ons lede te beskerm en te bevorder. Ons kongres is 'n sigbare bewys van hierdie waardes in aksie.

The SAOU has successfully concluded its National Congress, a significant event that sets the direction and vision of our union for the next three-year term.
The National Congress serves as the SAOU's highest decision-making body. One of the mandates of the Congress is to determine the strategic direction and priorities that will guide the union over the next three years.
CONGRESS MOTIONS
Twenty-four (24) motions were presented to Congress. These motions were grouped under the following main themes:
- Matters of national importance: These motions focus on trade union organisation, with particular emphasis on members' wellbeing and safety, conditions of service, and the protection of the teaching profession.
- Statutory obligations: These motions address outstanding matters relating to the South African Schools Act, Act No. 84 of 1996, as amended, participation in the revision of the post provisioning model, and the repositioning of inclusive education.
- Finance: These motions consider the impact of financial shortfalls on learners' constitutional right to quality basic education and on optimal working conditions for educators.
- Curriculum: Curriculum-related motions address the Department of Basic Education's outstanding and unfunded curriculum matters.
- SAOU: These motions relate to the strategic direction of the SAOU and service delivery to SAOU members.
- Other motions: These motions focus on improving service delivery within the public sector, strengthening the education system, and addressing the unlawful classification of schools.
Adopted motions are referred to the relevant departments and/or provinces for implementation. Progress reports on these motions will be submitted on an ongoing basis to the National Executive Committee and the National Executive Council.
From strategy to the classroom: What does this mean for you?
The approved motions and resolutions adopted during Congress form the foundation of our organisational approach and have a direct impact on:
- Member support: Strengthening legal assistance, professional development, and conditions of service.
- Policy influence: Strong, evidence-based representation at education authorities and national forums.
- Impact at school level: Practical solutions, guidance and support to make educators' day-to-day realities more manageable.
AMENDED CONSTITUTION
The Congress approved numerous constitutional changes. The main focus of these amendments was:
- Outdated processes replaced with modern technology;
- The constitution rewritten in clearer, more accessible language; and
- To formulate unambiguous statements for easy reference.
The amended constitution is currently with the Registrar of Labour for final approval.
CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE
Finally, the Congress also celebrated excellence while reaffirming our union's identity and loyalty:
- Recognition for faithful service and years of membership: We paid tribute to SAOU staff and SAOU members whose many years of selfless service have helped build the SAOU into the trusted organisation it is today.
- Education awards: During the Congress, we also had the opportunity to honour exceptional educators during our triennial Education Awards. Click here to read more about these winners.
- Launch of the SAOU anthem:
In collaboration with North-West University (NWU), the official SAOU anthem was launched. It will serve as a symbol of unity and pride at our flagship events.
The SAOU remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting and advancing the interests of our members through transparency, integrity and decisive action. Our Congress stands as a visible demonstration of these values in action.

SAOU CONTINUUM
Being an SAOU member also entitles you to Continuum, a death benefit that provides a cash payout of R20,000. This benefit is paid by the SAOU to the member's nominated beneficiary or, where no beneficiary has been nominated, to the member's estate.
Through Continuum, we hope to help strengthen the legacy you will one day leave behind.
